The Playstation 3 comes with very impressive specifications for a game console. It has changed quite dramatically since the Playstation 1 as well as the second version of the console.
CPU Processor
The Playstation 3 comes with a CPU processor, which runs ten times fast than standard PC chips according to its designers. The chip runs at speeds faster than 4 GHz.
Reality Synthesizer
The Playstation 3 also comes with a GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) RSX, which is a reality synthesiser; microprocessors dedicated to creating and displaying computer graphics. The GPU is capable of 128bit pixel precision and 1080p resolution, some very high resolution for a console. The RSX has 512MB of graphics memory and is capable of 51 billion dot products per second. In addition it has more than 300 million transistors, larger than any processor available to purchase today. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra video cards, which if purchased from shops which would cost approximately $1,000.
Size, Weight and Power
In terms of size and weight specifications, The Playstation3 weighs approximately 5kg and is roughly 325mm (W) x 98mm (H) x 274mm (D). The power usage ranges from 150–200 watts during normal use, even though it has a 380 watt power supply
Connectivity
Looking at specifications for the Playstation 3 for audio, the console supports a number of formats, including 7.1 digital audio, Dolby TrueHD amongst other ones. Audio output is possible over stereo analog cables or optical digital cables. or the optical disc drive, a wide variety of DVD and CD formats are supported, as well as Blu-ray Discs (a high-density optical disc format for the storage of digital media).
There are three configurations for the Playstation 3; 20GB, 60GB and 80GB, although the 20GB is no longer available in North America due to low sales. In the 60 GB and 80 GB versions, flash memory can also be used in the form of memory sticks, compact flash cards or SD, MMC. All three models support USB memory devices; flash drives and external hard drives are both automatically recognized.
Communication
For communication, the PS3 has one Gigabit Ethernet port (a transmitter port), four USB 2.0 ports, Bluetooth 2.0, and built-in Wi-Fi on the 60 and 80 GB versions.
The Playstation 3 clearly has a highly technological range of specifications that greatly surpass the specifications of the previous two models, Playstation 1 and Playstation 2.
